Going to the dogs

March 2007 - Linda Kenney

It’s true that the world is going to the dogs; but that’s a good thing. Current owners of  our canine friends will attest to the fact that their dog is a most loyal friend. As author Roger Caras once said, “If you don’t own a dog, at least one, there is not necessarily anything wrong with you, but there may be something wrong with your life.” Or as Andy Rooney explained, “The average dog is nicer than the average person.” Mark Twain’s explanation for his love of dogs included this: “If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man.”

For those of you who have gone to the dogs, congratulations. This month’s finds celebrate dog owning with fabulous items that will place a smile on your face and cause Fido to wag his tail vigorously in approval.

Perhaps your pooch would enjoy a unique treat. Try microwavable Doggie Popcorn by Dogmatic Products. Each bag makes four cups of popped corn. Doggie Donuts by Pawsitively Gourmet are also popular with the canine crowd and they are actually a good source of nutrition. Serve in a Bowl by Castlemere.

When it’s time to play, choose a polyester Floppy Chicken by Fat Cat Inc. This toy is triple stitched at the seams and squeaks loudly. The Hide a Bird by Kyjen challenges and develops your dog’s intelligence and puzzle-solving skills. Bath time is an aromatherapy moment with all natural mild cleansing Shampoo and Conditioner by Cain & Able. Infused with lavender, eucalyptus and citronella, your dog will be fabulous. After the bath, wrap your little lady in a hooded Bathrobe by Posh Poochy.

Remember, you’re not crazy; doggie clothes and accessories are the rage. Fran Lebowitz’s line, “If you are a dog and your owner suggests that you wear a sweater ... suggest that he wear a tail” is nonsense; dress your dog with guilt-free style.

With great panache, Duff, a standard poodle, wears a Wool Sweater by Chilly Dogs. Completing the look with Goggles by Doggles, he is a slave to fashion. Robin, a blue merle Australian Shepherd, smartly chooses a Cotton Sweater with cable knit sleeves by Dog Outer Gear. Of course, when she works out, she prefers a Hooded Sweatshirt by American Pup. Not to be outdone, Yorkie Lucy is resplendent in her cotton Print Dress by Blue Gem Millennium. Her coordinating carrier by Pretty Smith Designs has that certain je ne sais quoi. Kalcie, a golden retriever, prefers collars to clothes and is ready for the St. Patrick’s Day holiday with her Party Collar by Latham & Co; she’s a party animal.

If you haven’t succumbed already, you’ll soon be going to the dogs.
