Police Department
The nationally accredited Plano Police Department maintains an impressive public-safety record through the efforts of Chief Greg Rushin and the department’s 345 sworn police officers, 154 full-time non-sworn employees, and 78 part-time employees. According to the F.B.I. (Morgan Quitno Press), Plano ranks as the 41st safest city in the U.S.

In addition to law enforcement, the department provides innovative approaches to solving community problems. The School Liaison Unit places officers on secondary school campuses in Plano and coordinates the Youth Police Academy. The Citizens Police Academy and Senior Citizens Academy are coordinated through the Crime Prevention Unit and educate residents on the department’s operations.

Fire Department
Ten fire stations staffed with 269 firefighter/paramedics make up the Plano Fire Department, led by Chief William Peterson. Core services include fire suppression, emergency medical response, fire-safety education, and fire inspections. All personnel are cross-trained to enhance efficiency. Average response times of 5.19 minutes for fire and 4.59 minutes for EMS have earned the department an impressive Class 1 ISO rating. The Plano Fire Department is accredited by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International and Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services and is the only fire department in the United States with these two accreditations and a Class 1 ISO rating.

The fire chief serves as the Emergency Management Coordinator for the City of Plano. Fortunately, the Plano Fire Department’s local preparations for terrorism began prior to the September 11 attacks. Subsequently, the Plano Fire Department has improved the city’s terrorism response capabilities through several activities including: securing various grants for equipment, supplies and training, coordinating various city readiness activities, and creating the position of assistant emergency management coordinator.

The low fire property loss and death in Plano is due to an aggressive and proactive community safety effort led by the Plano Fire Department.
