Plano Schools

The Plano Independent School District serves more than 53,000 students on 67 campuses and two special program centers, among other service facilities. Nearly half of the district’s professional staff hold master’s degrees, and the teaching staff averages ten years of experience. All of the district’s facilities are linked by means of a private fiber-optic network. This provides everyone in the district the most advanced technological capabilities, including online curriculum, virtual libraries, real-time interactive broadcasting sessions, and video conferencing.

The U.S. Department of Education awarded the National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence award to 22 Plano ISD schools. Mathews and Saigling Elementary schools have each secured the title twice. Additionally, the Texas Business and Education Coalition and Just for The Kids has recognized Wilson Middle School and Clark High School as Honor Roll Schools. The Texas Education Agency has rated Plano ISD “Exemplary” or “Recognized” status on 28 of 31 student performance indicators and “Academically Acceptable” on three indicators.

A record 115 Plano ISD seniors in the Class of 2006 achieved Semifinalist standing in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These outstanding students represent the top one percent of the nation’s high school seniors.

Superintendent Dr. Doug Otto said that Plano ISD “will continue to be the school system where all students are encouraged to dream big and to reach their potential.” Plano ISD educational programs stress mastery of basic academic skills, development of good citizenship, and the ability to be successful at employment and higher education. More than 95 percent of PISD students continue their schooling following graduation.

A number of institutions in Plano offer private and parochial education for students. For example, John Paul II High School, Plano’s parochial high school, accommodates 1,200 students, in grades 9 - 12.

  • More that 95.5% of graduating seniors continue their formal education though higher education.

  • On recent surveys, about 90% of parents, teaching staff and high school seniors gave the district an A or B Rating.

Higher Education
Collin County Community College District has provided students a higher education since 1985. Each year, approximately 40,000 students enroll at one of the college’s six campuses, two of which are located in Plano. The district has plans to open an additional campus in Farmersville in 2007. Collin College also offers concurrent enrollment in many of the major four-year universities in Texas.

The University of Texas at Dallas is located along Plano’s southern edge. The school boasts a world-class faculty including two Nobel laureates and maintains international leadership in areas of audiology, brain health, computer science, digital forensics and cybercrime prevention, nanotechnology, sickle cell disease research, space science, and telecommunications.

There are several satellite campuses in Plano, including Southern Methodist University’s SMU in Legacy, Texas Woman’s University, University of Dallas at Plano, DeVry University and Dallas Baptist University.

Plano’s location in the Dallas/Fort Worth area puts it within commuting distance of numerous colleges and universities, including University of Texas at Arlington, University of North Texas, Texas Christian University and University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.
